### How to change the battery of the truck Raymond 8900

Guide to safely replace the battery (or the pair of batteries in 24 V systems) of the Raymond 8900. Estimated time: 30-60 minutes. Tools: 12-17 mm wrenches, gloves and safety glasses. Warning: truck batteries weigh 25-55 kg each. If the vehicle has a battery master switch (isolator), engage it before starting.

1. **Prepare the vehicle** — Park on flat, firm ground, apply the handbrake, place wheel chocks, and if the truck has a battery disconnect switch (master switch), engage it. Switch off all electrical loads.
2. **Locate the battery box** — The box is usually on the chassis side, behind the cab, or under it. Many trucks carry two batteries in series (24 V) or in parallel (higher capacity). Identify the configuration before touching anything.
3. **Open the box and inspect the connections** — Open the battery-box lid. Cables are much thicker than in a car; terminal bolts are usually 12-17 mm. Identify the ground cable (to chassis) and the bridge cable between batteries if there are two.
4. **Mark the layout before dismantling** — Take a photo or tag the cables with tape. In a series setup (24 V): battery 1 negative goes to chassis ground; battery 1 positive bridges to battery 2 negative; battery 2 positive feeds the system.
5. **Disconnect all grounds first** — Disconnect the ground cable (negative to chassis) and, if there are two batteries, the bridge cable between them. This order is critical: while any negative remains connected, an accidental positive-to-chassis contact causes a massive short circuit.
6. **Disconnect the positives** — With every ground isolated, disconnect the positive cables. Move them aside and cover them with a cloth or insulating tape so they cannot reconnect.
7. **Remove the old batteries** — Release the clamps, rods or retaining bars. Truck batteries weigh 25-55 kg each: wear gloves and goggles, ask for help or use a lifting device. Never lift them by the terminals.
8. **Install the new ones and reconnect in reverse order** — Clean the box with a brush or dry cloth and neutralise acid residue with diluted baking soda if there is sulphation. Fit the new batteries matching the original orientation. Connect positives first, then the bridge cables (if any), and the ground cables to chassis last. Apply petroleum jelly or anti-corrosion grease on the terminals.
9. **Re-enable and verify** — Close the box, re-engage the disconnect switch if present, and check the voltage with a multimeter (12.6-12.8 V at rest per battery, or 25.2-25.6 V total on 24 V systems). Start the truck and check tachograph, lights, HVAC and other systems. If the tachograph or ECM requires recalibration, go to an authorised service centre.

### How to identify the battery polarity of the Raymond 8900

Knowing your battery polarity (positive on the right or on the left) is the most important step before buying a replacement: connecting it the wrong way can damage the electronics. Estimated time: 2 minutes. Tools: eyes only — no tools required.

1. **Locate the battery** — Open the bonnet of the Raymond 8900 and find the battery. It is usually a rectangular block with two metal terminals (large screw heads) on top — one red or "+" and one black or "−".
2. **Identify the positive terminal** — The positive terminal (+) typically has a red cap, red sticker or cover, a raised "+" symbol on the casing, and/or a slightly larger diameter (19 mm vs 17 mm of the negative, in standard European batteries).
3. **Face the battery** — Look at the battery from the label side with the terminals near you — the edge with the terminals should face you, not the back.
4. **Determine polarity** — If the positive pole is on the RIGHT → choose a battery marked as "positive right". If it is on the LEFT → choose one marked as "positive left". (If the label of your current or new battery shows codes like 0, 1, 3 or 4: 0 and 4 are positive right; 1 and 3, positive left — 3 and 4 correspond to batteries with terminals on the narrow side.)
5. **Note the reference** — The label on top shows the reference (e.g. "A9", "TK960", "EA900"). Search for the exact model with that reference and the identified polarity — never change polarity without consulting the vehicle manufacturer.
