## Definition

BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) is a vehicle moved exclusively by one or more electric motors, powered by a **lithium traction battery (40-100 kWh, 400-800 V nominal)**. Typical WLTP range 250-600 km. Zero local emissions, zero noise, minimal mechanical maintenance (no oil, no filters, no clutch, brake pads last 3× longer thanks to regenerative braking). Predominant battery chemistries: **NMC** (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) in mid-to-high range and **LFP** (LiFePO4) in entry-level and Chinese vehicles (Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD, BYD). Charging time: 8-12 h on a 7-11 kW wallbox (overnight), 30-50 min to 80% on a CCS 50-150 kW rapid charger. Important: although BEVs have no conventional starting battery, **ALL BEVs carry a 12 V auxiliary battery** (typically AGM 40-60 Ah) that powers lights, computer, locks and engages the traction-battery contactors. If that 12 V battery dies, the car will NOT start even with the main battery full. Reference brands: Tesla, Volkswagen ID, BMW iX/i4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Renault Megane E-Tech.
