## Definition

PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a hybrid fitted with a larger battery (10-25 kWh) that can be recharged by plugging into the mains (Type 2 cable, household socket or wallbox). This gives it **40-80 km of pure electric range** — enough for most daily journeys — and the combustion engine only kicks in on long trips or when extra power is demanded. If the user plugs it in every night, weeks can pass without filling up; if it is never plugged in, fuel consumption is higher than a comparable HEV (because of the extra battery weight). Tax classification in Spain: CERO emissions sticker (same as a pure BEV). Examples: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, BMW 330e, Mercedes GLE 350de or C 300e, Toyota Prius Plug-in. The 12 V auxiliary battery the user replaces is still a small AGM — the high-voltage traction battery (400-800 V) is only serviced in specialised workshops.
