Smart charger
Microprocessor-controlled charger that detects battery type, SOC and applies optimal charge phases. Replaces basic chargers.
A smart charger has a microprocessor that automatically detects the battery type (flooded lead-acid, AGM, GEL, EFB, lithium) and applies the optimal charge algorithm in several phases: initial analysis, bulk charge (up to 80% SOC), absorption (slow up to 100%), float (maintenance at reduced voltage). Compared to a basic charger from the 80s (transformer + diode, fixed voltage), it reduces the risk of overcharge, sulphation and damage from incorrect charging for the battery type. Most include a desulphation phase (high-frequency pulses) for lightly sulphated batteries. Reference models: CTEK MXS 5.0/MXS 10, NOCO Genius 5/10, Bosch C7.
For a typical garage car a 5-10 A charger is sufficient. Charging time: a 70 Ah battery discharged to 50% takes about 7-10 hours with a 5 A charger.
