Varta A2 12V 170Ah 1000A is a professional battery for heavy commercial vehicles. Withstands constant chassis vibration, supports long cold-engine cranks and keeps auxiliary services running (tachograph, heater, refrigeration, GPS) during driver's mandatory rest stops.

The Varta A2 lorry battery is the 12 V, 170 Ah and 1000 A cold cranking (EN) model from Varta's ProMotive AGM from Varta, designed for trucks, buses, large vans and machinery. It replaces the original battery in lorries with the 513 × 223 × 223 mm format without any modifications: the same 170 Ah capacity.
The Varta A2 covers the needs of lorries, buses, large vans and machinery with 170 Ah of capacity and a construction built for that use. Check that it matches your current battery in dimensions, terminals and hold-down: this reference has a B00 hold-down.
Its outer dimensions are 513 × 223 × 223 mm. It uses a B00 hold-down, the system that anchors it to the vehicle's battery tray. Before replacing it, measure the space your current battery occupies: if it matches on all three dimensions and on terminal position, the swap is direct and needs no adapters.
The ProMotive AGM range is Varta's AGM series for commercial vehicles, with maximum resistance to cycling and vibration. It is designed for lorries that draw heavily on the battery while the engine is switched off.
It is the one for cabs with a "hotel load" (air conditioning, fridge and electronics during rest breaks), tail lifts and cranes, where the battery works far beyond simply starting the engine.
A commercial vehicle demands a high cranking current and endurance against the vibration of thousands of kilometres. This series uses reinforced grids and rugged construction to cope with repeated starts of large diesel engines and with the draw of auxiliary cab equipment.
A good share of the vehicles on Europe's roads left the factory with a Varta fitted: the brand has been supplying the assembly lines of the major car groups for decades. Replacing with Varta means, in practice, giving the vehicle back the battery its manufacturer intended.
Behind Varta is Clarios, one of the largest manufacturers of starter batteries in the world and a supplier to the assembly lines of numerous car brands. That German engineering heritage translates into reliable starting year after year.
Varta is Europe's leading manufacturer of starter batteries: its production volume and quality controls guarantee consistent reliability batch after batch, something own-brand makers cannot always assure.
The Varta A2 battery comes with a 1-year official warranty from the manufacturer. One important warning for commercial vehicles: most lorries are fitted with two batteries connected in series (a 24 V installation). If you replace only one, the new battery ends up working alongside the old one — which has already lost capacity and has higher internal resistance; that imbalance means one is overcharged while the other falls short, shortens the life of the new battery, and the manufacturer may regard it as improper use and void the warranty. That is why it is always advisable to change both batteries at the same time.
In professional use, periodically checking the state of charge and the battery's hold-down prevents breakdowns out on the road. Vibration and the high temperatures of the engine bay are the factors that shorten its life the most, so secure mounting is key. Keeping the terminals clean and tight and checking the charging system extends battery life in vehicles that clock up long hours. A well-maintained battery reduces the risk of downtime caused by a failure to start.

Guide to replace a truck battery in 30-60 minutes. Truck batteries weigh 25-50 kg — we recommend working in pairs and using a carrying strap.
Park on a flat surface, switch off the engine and remove the key. Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are off. Wait 1-2 minutes before starting.
Open the bonnet. The battery is usually in the engine bay, but in many modern cars it may be in the boot or under the passenger seat. Check the manual if you cannot find it.
Use the 10 mm wrench to loosen the negative cable nut (black, marked −) and remove the cable from the post. Move it aside so it cannot touch any bodywork.
Repeat with the positive cable (red, marked +). Important: never let a terminal touch metal of the car while the other is still connected.
Loosen the bottom hold-down clamp. Truck batteries weigh 25-50 kg — lift in pairs with gloves and a carrying strap. Forcing the lift alone risks back injury.
Place the battery in the same orientation as the old one (positive terminal on the same side). Tighten the hold-down clamp firmly.
Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−). Tighten the nuts with the wrench until each terminal does not move. Apply anti-spark grease if you have any.
Close the bonnet. Start the engine to confirm everything works. On cars with Start-Stop or a BMS, you may need to register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.
Three ways: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team for the A2; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET).
In most trucks it fits in 15-30 minutes with a 10 mm wrench; if the battery is under the seat or in the boot the time can double. See the step-by-step guide on this page. Quick summary: 1) switch off the engine and remove the key; 2) locate the original battery (engine bay, boot or under seat); 3) disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+); 4) loosen the hold-down clamp and remove the old battery; 5) fit the new one in the same orientation — match the polarity shown on the product sheet; 6) connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−). On trucks with Start-Stop or BMS, register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.
This battery includes 1 year of official manufacturer warranty against manufacturing defects. It covers internal electrical failures and abnormal capacity drops. It does NOT cover misuse (sulfation from heavy duty without proper recharge, alternator overcharge, etc.). On confirmed defect after technical inspection, we replace the A2 at no cost.

Expected lifespan of the Varta A2 is 4 to 7 years in regular use (depends on technology and climate). In cold regions it drops slightly due to cold-start stress; in very hot regions it also drops because of electrolyte evaporation. To extend its life: avoid deep discharges (headlights on with engine off), have the alternator checked yearly, and keep the battery clean and properly secured.
Dimensions (length × width × height) are 513×223×223 mm — also written as 513x223x223 mm — following the European DIN standard. Always measure the space in your truck before buying: even one extra millimetre can prevent the hold-down clamp from closing. The height shown includes the terminals.
It weighs 47,5 kg. Most of the weight is lead. If you plan to fit it yourself, use gloves and a carrying strap (AGM batteries are slightly heavier than conventional due to the absorbent glass-mat fibre).
Three options to confirm: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET). The A2 typically fits a wide range of European vehicles thanks to its standard DIN case format.
Directly interchangeable batteries (same dimensions, same polarity, same Ah and CCA) are the OEM equivalents from leading brands: Bosch, Tudor, Exide and, depending on the model, Banner or Yuasa. Exact equivalence depends on technology — an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery in Start-Stop trucks. See the "Equivalents" section to view recommended options at the same performance level.
This battery and its equivalents from Bosch, Tudor or Exide are technically comparable: same dimensions, same voltage and same capacity. The differences are warranty (Varta and Bosch: 2 years; Tudor and Exide: 2 years on the equivalent line), manufacturing plant (Varta and Bosch share origin in the Clarios Group; Tudor and Exide belong to Exide Technologies) and price. For private use any of these brands will give 4-6 years of life. Compare them in the "Equivalents" section.
The product rating, when available, is shown on the product page next to the stars. You can also check our public Trustpilot profile at shop level (4.5/5 from 11,154+ verified reviews). Most-praised points: reliable cold start, lifespan above 5 years and fast delivery; most common complaints mention BMS-equipped trucks that need OBD registration after fitting.
