The Exide EB440 in practice
When not to choose it
Rule it out if the car has Start-Stop, even if the dimensions match: conventional technology cannot take that cycling. And always keep at least the original Ah and A.

Car battery Exide EB440 Excell 44Ah 400A 12V
The Exide EB440 from the Excell range delivers 44 Ah and 400 A of cold cranking current (EN) at 12 V: the usual specification for passenger cars with conventional starting, without a Start-Stop system. It measures 175 × 175 × 190 mm and the positive terminal on the right, the format sought by anyone replacing a 44 Ah battery in cars.
In short: the Exide EB440 (44 Ah, 400 A, 175 × 175 × 190 mm, positive terminal on the right). It is a conventional battery for cars without Start-Stop: if yours has Start-Stop, it needs an EFB or AGM battery of the same size. Verified equivalent alternatives: Tudor TB440 and Varta B36.
- Reliable cold starts, even after weeks without driving.
- Conventional lead-acid: the most proven and economical technology.
- Original-equipment build quality without the dealership price.
- Direct replacement for the original battery in size and terminals.
Dimensions, polarity and mounting
The Exide EB440 is made in the 175 × 175 × 190 mm format and weighs 10.70 kg. The positive terminal on the right decides which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes most buying mistakes, so check it before ordering. Checking the three dimensions and the terminal position before buying avoids the most common mistake when replacing a battery.
Vehicles compatible with the Exide EB440
This battery appears as compatible in more than 138 vehicles from manufacturers such as Fiat, Aixam, Citroën, Lancia, Ford and Toyota. It is a go-to option when you need a battery for a Fiat, Aixam or other models that use this same format. The compatibility list also includes models from Chevrolet, Peugeot, Ligier, Volkswagen, Microcar, Smart, Seat and Skoda. It covers 107 original-equipment references, one of the widest coverages in its format.
The Exide EB440: Excell range and conventional lead-acid technology
The Excell is the Exide range the EB440 belongs to: it shares the same construction and quality criteria with the rest of the series, and varies in capacity and format to suit each vehicle.
The conventional lead-acid battery remains the most widespread technology thanks to its balance of capacity, cranking current and price. Well maintained and kept charged, it offers years of reliable service in vehicles without Start-Stop.
What Exide does differently
Exide is one of the world's largest battery manufacturers and an original-equipment supplier to many car makers. Its European plants produce starter, industrial and leisure batteries under original-equipment quality controls. All the Exide batteries in our catalogue are genuine product, recently manufactured and covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Manufacturer's warranty
The Exide EB440 comes with the manufacturer's official warranty against manufacturing defects; the exact period is stated in the brand's conditions. If it fails through a defect within the period, we replace it free of charge.
Usage and maintenance tips
On batteries with filler caps, check the electrolyte level and top up only with distilled water. In normal daily use the alternator keeps the battery charged; if the car stands for weeks, a maintenance charge once a month prevents deep discharge.
Shipping, delivery and returns
Same-day dispatch from our warehouse for in-stock orders placed before 6:00 pm: 24-48 working hours in mainland Spain and Portugal, 3 to 5 days in the islands and the rest of Europe. Returns are accepted for 14 days if the battery has not been used (free collection on the Iberian mainland). You will receive tracking by email.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change this battery step by step?
Tool: a 10 mm spanner. Time: 15-30 minutes on almost every car, and up to double if the battery is not under the bonnet but in the boot or under a seat. With the engine stopped and the key removed, always start with the negative (−) terminal, then the positive (+). Free the clamp, swap the battery without turning it round (this one has positive on the right) so the polarity stays the same, and reconnect in reverse: positive (+) first, negative (−) last. Before you start, check the car handbook: the manufacturer's procedure always comes first. Our full step-by-step guide is on the blog.
What is the service life of the EB440 model?
As a guide, you can expect the Exide EB440 to last 4 to 6 years in regular car use without Start-Stop, although the real figure may be higher or lower. Actual lifespan varies with climate (cold starts, heat evaporating the electrolyte), with usage and short journeys, with the condition of the alternator and charging system, with power draw while parked and with maintenance; the type of car and Start-Stop also count.
What are the measurements of the EB440 model?
Measure the battery tray before ordering: a one-millimetre difference is enough for the hold-down clamp not to close. It measures 175×175×190 mm in length × width × height, with the terminals included in the height.
What polarity does the Exide EB440 battery have?
On the Exide EB440, the polarity is positive on the right. To check, stand the battery in front of you with the terminals nearest you: the positive (+) is the one with the red ring. A change of polarity from the original means longer cables or a reconfigured system and can cause a short circuit: check it before ordering.
Is the EB440 valid for my vehicle?
The quickest way is to enter your number plate in the finder: DGT/DVLA/KBA detect model and engine. You can also look at the "Compatible vehicles" tab, verified by our technical team, or send us make, model, engine and year on WhatsApp; we answer during business hours (Mon–Fri 10:00–13:30 and 16:30–18:00 (Spanish time, CET)). The compatibility list for the EB440 runs to 138 verified vehicle versions. In every case, the car manufacturer's specifications (owner's handbook) take precedence.
Which batteries are equivalent to the Exide EB440?
Technology matters too: in Start-Stop cars, an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery. The options at the same level are in the "Equivalents" section of this page. A direct equivalent needs what this EB440 offers: 175×175×190 mm, positive on the right, the same Ah and CCA and conventional technology.
Exide EB440 or Varta B36: which one to choose?
Same case and same fitting as the EB440, from Varta. Compared with the EB440 it has 20 A of cold cranking more. It costs 34,15 € less. If you want to save or the EB440 is out of stock, it is the safe alternative: same dimensions, same polarity and official warranty.
Exide EB440 or Varta A10: which one to choose?

Compared with the EB440 it has 4 Ah less and 20 A of cold cranking more. It costs 26,65 € more.
