Varta B90 12V 190Ah 1050A is an SHD (Super Heavy Duty) truck battery for intensive professional use. Vibration-resistant, withstands long cold-diesel cranks and deep discharges during parking with active loads (tachograph, refrigeration, heater).

The Varta B90 lorry battery is the 12 V, 190 Ah model with 1050 A of cold cranking power (EN) from Varta's ProMotive EFB range, intended for lorries, buses, large vans and machinery. Its 513 × 223 × 223 mm dimensions and positive terminal on the left make it the exact replacement for the 190 Ah battery fitted as standard in many lorries.
The Varta B90 is compatible with more than 1.268 vehicles: it is fitted as standard or as a replacement by brands such as MAN, Scania, Volvo, Iveco, Mercedes-Benz and Renault. If you are after a battery for a MAN or Scania in these dimensions, the B90 is one of the usual replacement references. Added to that list are models from DAF, Ginaf, Steyr, Terberg, Magirus-Deutz, Erf, Foden and BMC.
Its external dimensions are 513 × 223 × 223 mm and it weighs 45,34 kg. The positive terminal on the left determines which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes the most buying mistakes, so it is worth checking before you order. It uses a B00 hold-down and terminal 1, the system that anchors it to the vehicle's battery tray. Before replacing it, measure the space your current battery occupies: if it matches on all three dimensions and on terminal position, the swap is direct and needs no adapters.
The ProMotive EFB range uses reinforced EFB technology for commercial transport with frequent starts and a heavy electrical draw. It stands up to the cycling of professional use far better than a conventional battery.
It is the middle-ground solution for lorries and large vans: more durability than standard lead without the cost of AGM, ideal for delivery work and routes with plenty of stops.
Compared with a passenger-car battery, this range is calibrated for severe, continuous use: greater mechanical strength and more tolerance of cycling and of the knocks of the road. It is the correct replacement for a lorry, bus or machine that puts in long days.
Varta is a byword for reliability: original equipment in numerous European vehicles and one of the most proven brands on the market. Replacing your battery with a Varta restores OEM quality — the same performance as the factory-fitted unit — with the manufacturer's backing.
Varta combines more than a century of experience with Clarios's industrial production: it is the battery many manufacturers choose as standard and one of the most recommended by workshops. Like every lead-acid battery, it is 100% recyclable.
More than 100 manufacturing parameters are checked on every Varta battery before it leaves the plant, a level of rigour that explains why so many workshops and manufacturers trust the brand as their first-choice replacement.
The Varta B90 battery comes with the official manufacturer warranty. One important warning for commercial vehicles: most lorries carry two batteries connected in series (a 24 V installation). If you replace only one, the new battery ends up working alongside the old one — which has already lost capacity and has higher internal resistance; that imbalance means one is overcharged while the other falls short, it shortens the life of the new unit, and the manufacturer may treat it as misuse and void the warranty. That is why it is always advisable to change both batteries at the same time.
In professional use, periodically checking the state of charge and the battery hold-down prevents breakdowns out on the road. Vibration and the high temperatures of the engine bay are the factors that shorten its life most, so secure mounting is key. Keeping the terminals clean and tight and checking the charging system extends battery life in vehicles that clock up long hours. A well-maintained battery reduces the risk of stoppages caused by a failure to start.

Guide to replace a truck battery in 30-60 minutes. Truck batteries weigh 25-50 kg — we recommend working in pairs and using a carrying strap.
Park on a flat surface, switch off the engine and remove the key. Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are off. Wait 1-2 minutes before starting.
Open the bonnet. The battery is usually in the engine bay, but in many modern cars it may be in the boot or under the passenger seat. Check the manual if you cannot find it.
Use the 10 mm wrench to loosen the negative cable nut (black, marked −) and remove the cable from the post. Move it aside so it cannot touch any bodywork.
Repeat with the positive cable (red, marked +). Important: never let a terminal touch metal of the car while the other is still connected.
Loosen the bottom hold-down clamp. Truck batteries weigh 25-50 kg — lift in pairs with gloves and a carrying strap. Forcing the lift alone risks back injury.
Place the battery in the same orientation as the old one (positive terminal on the same side). Tighten the hold-down clamp firmly.
Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−). Tighten the nuts with the wrench until each terminal does not move. Apply anti-spark grease if you have any.
Close the bonnet. Start the engine to confirm everything works. On cars with Start-Stop or a BMS, you may need to register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.
Yes. The B90 is an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): flooded lead-acid reinforced with plate additives. Withstands more cycles than a conventional but fewer than an AGM. Fitted to trucks with basic Start-Stop (no regenerative braking). More affordable than an equivalent AGM, lifespan 4-6 years.
Yes. As EFB technology it is designed for Start-Stop vehicles. EFB batteries cover basic Start-Stop (no regenerative braking). EFB is recommended for basic Start-Stop; AGM is recommended when regenerative braking is also present, thanks to its higher cycle capability. It works straight out of the box — on most modern vehicles registering the battery via OBD is recommended so the alternator automatically applies the optimal charging profile.
In most trucks it fits in 15-30 minutes with a 10 mm wrench; if the battery is under the seat or in the boot the time can double. See the step-by-step guide on this page. Quick summary: 1) switch off the engine and remove the key; 2) locate the original battery (engine bay, boot or under seat); 3) disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+); 4) loosen the hold-down clamp and remove the old battery; 5) fit the new one in the same orientation — match the polarity shown on the product sheet; 6) connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−). On trucks with Start-Stop or BMS, register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.
Expected lifespan of the Varta B90 is 4 to 6 years in basic Start-Stop truck use. In cold regions it drops slightly due to cold-start stress; in very hot regions it also drops because of electrolyte evaporation. To extend its life: avoid deep discharges (headlights on with engine off), have the alternator checked yearly, and keep the battery clean and properly secured.
Dimensions (length × width × height) are 513×223×223 mm — also written as 513x223x223 mm — following the European DIN standard. Always measure the space in your truck before buying: even one extra millimetre can prevent the hold-down clamp from closing. The height shown includes the terminals.
Three options to confirm: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 10:00–13:30 and 16:40–18:00 (Spanish time, CET)). The B90 fits 1,268 verified vehicle versions in our database.
Directly interchangeable batteries (same dimensions, same polarity, same Ah and CCA) are the OEM equivalents from leading brands: Bosch, Tudor, Exide and, depending on the model, Banner or Yuasa. Exact equivalence depends on technology — an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery in Start-Stop trucks. See the "Equivalents" section to view recommended options at the same performance level.
An EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is a flooded lead-acid battery reinforced with plate additives (carbon and polyethylene) and thicker grids. It withstands twice the cycles of a conventional battery and handles deep discharges better, but less than an AGM. It is the original fitment on trucks with basic Start-Stop (no regenerative braking): Renault Energy TCe, Peugeot/Citroën PureTech, Fiat MultiAir, Hyundai/Kia ISG, Ford EcoBoost. If your truck came with EFB from the factory, this is the correct battery — upgrading to AGM is optional (marginal improvement). If it came with AGM, EFB may fall short: better fit AGM. The Varta B90 is original and meets EN 50342-6.
On most trucks it is not strictly necessary — the alternator detects the new battery and adapts the charge automatically. It is recommended to register the battery via OBD so that the alternator applies the optimal charging profile from the first minute and extends the battery life as much as possible (especially on brands with sophisticated BMS: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Land Rover). Any workshop with an OBD scanner (~10-15 € labour) does it in 5 minutes. DIY apps: VCDS / Carista (VAG), Bimmercode (BMW), iCarsoft. If you do not register, the truck will still start correctly — the alternator just takes a few days to adjust the profile. The Varta B90 ships factory-charged at 80-90% so you can use it straight after fitting.
