The Varta D39 car battery is the 12 V, 63 Ah model with 610 A of cold cranking power (EN) from Varta's Dynamic SLI (formerly Blue Dynamic) range, intended for cars with conventional starting, without a Start-Stop system. Its 242 × 175 × 190 mm dimensions and positive terminal on the left make it the exact replacement for the 63 Ah battery fitted as standard in many cars.

  • Reliable cold starting thanks to its high cranking current.
  • Direct replacement for the original battery in cars without Start-Stop.
  • Maintenance-free lead-acid technology: no topping up with water.
  • Long service life with normal use and a charging system in good order.

Format and fitting of the Varta D39

The Varta D39 is made in the 242 × 175 × 190 mm format and weighs 15,3 kg. The positive terminal on the left determines which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes the most buying mistakes, so it is worth checking before you order. It uses a B13 hold-down and terminal 1, the system that anchors it to the vehicle's battery tray. Before replacing it, measure the space your current battery occupies: if it matches on all three dimensions and on terminal position, the swap is direct and needs no adapters.

The Varta D39 and the Dynamic SLI range

The Dynamic SLI is Varta's entry range for vehicles with traditional starting (without Start-Stop), bringing what used to be the Blue, Silver and Black Dynamic series together under a single name by technology. Its lead-calcium construction with optimised separators puts the emphasis on punchy starting and a long, maintenance-free life.

It covers the vast majority of conventional petrol and diesel cars on the European market. It is the sensible choice when you want German manufacturing quality without paying the premium for AGM or EFB technology the vehicle does not need.

Compared with an EFB or AGM Start-Stop battery, this range puts the emphasis on a keen price and punchy starting in conventional cars. With proper care — avoiding deep discharges and checking the alternator — a battery from this series delivers several years of trouble-free service. This battery used to belong to Varta's Blue Dynamic, Silver Dynamic or Black Dynamic range; following the brand's commercial renaming (2025), it forms part of the new Dynamic SLI series.

Why choose a Varta battery

A good share of the vehicles on Europe's roads left the factory with a Varta fitted: the brand has spent decades supplying the assembly lines of the leading car groups. Replacing with Varta means, in practice, giving the vehicle back the battery the manufacturer had in mind.

Varta batteries are made under the Clarios group with German technology and quality controls that make them one of the best-selling choices in Europe. As a lead battery, it is 100% recyclable through any collection point.

Varta's production combines automated lines with verification of more than 100 parameters per unit; that traceability is what underpins its reputation for reliable starting throughout the battery's life.

Manufacturer's warranty

The Varta D39 battery comes with a 2-year official warranty from the manufacturer.

Care and maintenance

To get the most out of it, keep the alternator in good order and avoid leaving lights or accessories on with the engine switched off. Repeated very short journeys are its main enemy: they stop the battery from recharging fully and shorten its life. If the car is going to stand unused for weeks, it is worth disconnecting the terminal or using a trickle charger so it does not drop below the safe threshold. Making sure the terminals are clean and properly tightened also helps towards reliable starting.

How to change the battery

Step-by-step guide to replace your car battery in 15-30 minutes (longer if the battery is under the seat or in the boot) without losing vehicle settings.

⏱ 15-30 min🛠 Tools: 10 mm wrench · Protective gloves
  1. Step 1. Prepare the vehicle

Park on a flat surface, switch off the engine and remove the key. Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are off. Wait 1-2 minutes before starting.

  2. Step 2. Locate the battery

Open the bonnet. The battery is usually in the engine bay, but in many modern cars it may be in the boot or under the passenger seat. Check the manual if you cannot find it.

  3. Step 3. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal

Use the 10 mm wrench to loosen the negative cable nut (black, marked −) and remove the cable from the post. Move it aside so it cannot touch any bodywork.

  4. Step 4. Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

Repeat with the positive cable (red, marked +). Important: never let a terminal touch metal of the car while the other is still connected.

  5. Step 5. Remove the old battery

Loosen the bottom hold-down clamp with the same wrench. Lift the battery carefully (it can weigh 15-25 kg). Clean the tray with a brush and baking soda if there is corrosion.

  6. Step 6. Install the new battery

Place the battery in the same orientation as the old one (positive terminal on the same side). Tighten the hold-down clamp firmly.

  7. Step 7. Connect the cables

Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−). Tighten the nuts with the wrench until each terminal does not move. Apply anti-spark grease if you have any.

  8. Step 8. Verify the engine starts

Close the bonnet. Start the engine to confirm everything works. On cars with Start-Stop or a BMS, you may need to register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify this battery is the right one?

Three ways: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team for the D39; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET).

How do I fit the D39 model in my car?

In most cars it fits in 15-30 minutes with a 10 mm wrench; if the battery is under the seat or in the boot the time can double. See the step-by-step guide on this page. Quick summary: 1) switch off the engine and remove the key; 2) locate the original battery (engine bay, boot or under seat); 3) disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+); 4) loosen the hold-down clamp and remove the old battery; 5) fit the new one in the same orientation — match the polarity shown on the product sheet; 6) connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−). On cars with Start-Stop or BMS, register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.

What warranty does the Varta D39 battery have?

The official manufacturer warranty is 2 years and covers manufacturing defects. It covers cell failures, internal short-circuits and abnormal capacity drops. It does NOT cover misuse (prolonged overcharging, inadequate charger, defective alternator). Once the defect is verified by technical inspection, we replace the D39 at no cost.

How long does Varta D39 delivery take?

In mainland Spain and Portugal it arrives in 24 h if you order before 17:00 and the battery is in stock — it leaves the same day and arrives the next business day. Afternoon or weekend orders ship the next business day. For Balearics, Canaries and other EU destinations, allow 2-5 days. Shipping cost is calculated in the cart based on destination and service (standard, express, cash on delivery). Tracking number is sent by email + SMS as soon as the parcel ships.

How do I return the D39 model if it doesn't fit?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to return it. In mainland Spain and Portugal returns are FREE — we cover the return shipping cost via prepaid label. In other EU countries the return shipping cost is the customer's. It must arrive in its original packaging with no signs of installation. If it was defective, the warranty covers replacement even after the 14-day period.

Where do I find the D39 model online?

At baterias.com — authorised distributor with real stock, 24h delivery in mainland Spain and Portugal if you order before 17:00, and full manufacturer warranty. Shipping cost is calculated in the cart based on destination and chosen service (standard, express, cash on delivery). Secure payment by card, Bizum, PayPal or bank transfer. If you choose at-home installation, our technician will take the used battery and dispose of it through an authorised collection point.

How long does the Varta D39 battery last?

Expected lifespan of the Varta D39 is 4 to 6 years in regular car use without Start-Stop. In cold regions it drops slightly due to cold-start stress; in very hot regions it also drops because of electrolyte evaporation. To extend its life: avoid deep discharges (headlights on with engine off), have the alternator checked yearly, and keep the battery clean and properly secured.

What are the dimensions of the Varta D39 battery?

Dimensions (length × width × height) are 242×175×190 mm — also written as 242x175x190 mm and correspond to the European L2 case size — following the European DIN standard. Always measure the space in your car before buying: even one extra millimetre can prevent the hold-down clamp from closing. The height shown includes the terminals.

How many kilos does this battery weigh?

It weighs 14,8 kg. Most of the weight is lead. If you plan to fit it yourself, use gloves and a carrying strap (AGM batteries are slightly heavier than conventional due to the absorbent glass-mat fibre).

How many Ah and CCA does this battery have?

Nominal capacity 63 Ah[?cca: and [cold-cranking amps 610 A]] at 12 V. Ah measure the total energy available (autonomy); CCA (also written A in cold or EN under the European standard) measure the instantaneous power to crank the starter motor. A battery with more CCA starts better in winter; one with more Ah keeps accessories on for longer.

Under which reference is the Varta D39 listed in catalogues?

The manufacturer reference (MPN) is D39 and its ETN code is 5634010613162 (short form 563 401 061), the European identifier used in spare-part catalogues. The EAN-13 barcode is 4016987119761. It belongs to the Varta Dynamic SLI range. Any of these codes identifies exactly this battery when requesting quotes or comparing prices.

Is the D39 valid for my vehicle?

Three options to confirm: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET). The D39 fits 189 verified vehicle versions in our database.

Which batteries are equivalent to the Varta D39?

Directly interchangeable batteries (same dimensions, same polarity, same Ah and CCA) are the OEM equivalents from leading brands: Bosch, Tudor, Exide and, depending on the model, Banner or Yuasa. Exact equivalence depends on technology — an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery in Start-Stop cars. See the "Equivalents" section to view recommended options at the same performance level.

Is this battery a better choice than another equivalent?

This battery and its equivalents from Bosch, Tudor or Exide are technically comparable: same dimensions, same voltage and same capacity. The differences are warranty (Varta and Bosch: 2 years; Tudor and Exide: 2 years on the equivalent line), manufacturing plant (Varta and Bosch share origin in the Clarios Group; Tudor and Exide belong to Exide Technologies) and price. For private use any of these brands will give 4-6 years of life. Compare them in the "Equivalents" section.
