Jump-starting a car is simple, but a modern vehicle carries more electronics than an 80s airliner: doing it in the wrong order can cost you an ECU. This is the safe procedure, and the three mistakes that really break things.

What you need

Proper jump leads with real cross-section (at least 16 mm² for petrol, 25 mm² for diesel; cheap thin ones heat up and won't carry current) and a donor car with a similar-sized battery. First check neither battery has visible damage (cracks, swelling or leaks): if so, do not jump-start it.

The exact order (do not change it)

  1. Both cars with the ignition off and not touching each other.
  2. Red to the positive of the flat battery.
  3. The other red to the positive of the donor.
  4. Black to the negative of the donor.
  5. The other black to a metal ground point on the broken-down car (an engine bolt, a bracket), away from the battery. Not to the negative terminal: the spark next to a battery that gives off hydrogen is not theoretical.
  6. Start the donor and let it idle slightly fast for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Start the flat car. If it doesn't fire in 3-4 attempts of 5 seconds, stop: something else is wrong.
  8. Remove the leads in exactly the reverse order, without letting them touch.

Why that order and no other

Connecting the positives first and leaving the ground for last reduces the risk of a short circuit while you handle the clamps: if the loose end touches bodywork while the other is already on a positive, nothing serious happens until the final step. And taking the last black clamp to a ground point away from the battery, rather than to the negative terminal, keeps the inevitable closing spark away from the gases the flat battery gives off. The three mistakes that break electronics

  • Removing the clamps with the engine just started and revving: the voltage spike (load dump) is absorbed by the electronics. Let the engine settle to a stable idle before disconnecting.
  • Reversing the polarity: main fuses, alternator and ECUs at risk. Double-check the terminals — the positive usually has a red cover and the + sign.
  • Jump-starting a start-stop car from its own flat AGM battery over and over: each attempt deepens the discharge. By the third, stop insisting and move to a jump starter or a replacement.

If even with leads it won't start
