A motorhome doesn't have “a” battery: it has two separate systems with opposite requirements, and the costliest mistake is buying for one what the other actually needs. This guide takes you from zero to knowing exactly what to order.

  • There are two circuits: the starter battery (chassis) and the leisure battery (habitation area).
  • In the habitation area you need deep-cycle: AGM, gel or lithium — never a starter battery.

  • Choose by cycles, not just price: the “expensive” one is usually half the cost per cycle.

Two circuits: engine and habitation area

  • Starter battery: the chassis battery (Fiat Ducato, Mercedes Sprinter…). It's a normal car battery — a lot of current for a few seconds — and is chosen the same way: dimensions, Ah and CCA, or directly by number plate.
  • Leisure (habitation) battery: powers the fridge, lights, water pump, heating and chargers for hours with the engine off. A starter battery won't do here: you need deep discharge, i.e. a cyclic battery.

The mistake we see every week: fitting a starter battery in the habitation area “because it was cheaper”. It dies within a single season, because it isn't built to be emptied deeply again and again.

The rule of thumb: if you go away 3-4 weeks a year, choose AGM; if you travel every month, choose gel; if the motorhome is your home (or you want a serious solar setup), lithium pays for itself through its lifespan and low weight alone.

Lithium versus lead: the sum that actually matters

Lithium costs more to buy, but its cost per cycle usually wins out when use is intensive. A good-quality gel battery lasts around 600-900 useful cycles; a LiFePO4, between 2,000 and 5,000. Lithium also weighs a third as much, charges much faster (making better use of every hour of sun or alternator time) and delivers 80-90 % of its capacity without strain, against lead's 50 %. In return, lead wins on upfront cost and simplicity, and doesn't mind the cold as much as a lithium battery without a low-temperature BMS. If you live in the motorhome or rely on solar power, lithium pays for itself; for summer getaways, a good AGM or gel is more than enough.

How much capacity you actually need: the honest calculation

Add up your approximate daily consumption:

  • Compressor fridge: 30-50 Ah/day
  • LED lights: ~5 Ah
  • Water pump and auxiliaries: ~5 Ah
  • Phones and laptop: ~10 Ah
  • Diesel heating in winter (fan): 15-20 Ah

Typical use comes to around 60-80 Ah a day. And now the catch almost nobody mentions:

A lead battery (AGM or gel) comfortably delivers only 50 % of its rated capacity without drastically shortening its life. For 70 Ah a day and one day of autonomy you need ~140 Ah rated in lead… or just ~80-90 Ah real in lithium. That's why 100 Ah AGM batteries so often fall short.

Adding a solar panel gives you almost unlimited autonomy whenever the sun's out, but the battery bank is still your cushion for the night and cloudy days: don't size it too tightly.

The charger matters as much as the battery

Every technology needs its own charging curve: lithium needs a charger or booster compatible with LiFePO4; gel needs a specific gel profile. Charging with the wrong profile shortens the battery's life or damages it outright. If you fit lithium, check that the mains charger, the engine booster (DC-DC) and the solar regulator are all compatible — it's common to replace the battery and forget the charger, leaving the new lithium battery never charging properly.

Winter storage: don't neglect it

Six months sitting idle without maintenance takes half the life off any battery. Before putting the motorhome away, charge it to 100 %, disconnect the negative terminal and, if you can, leave a maintenance charger connected or check the charge every two months. Lithium copes better with being left idle, but it doesn't like sitting at half charge in the cold either.

How the battery bank is wired and protected

Once you've chosen the battery, the installation makes the difference between it lasting as long as promised or not. The leisure circuit must be kept separate from the starter circuit via a split-charge relay or a DC-DC charger, so the fridge doesn't leave you without a start. Each section needs its own fuse and a generous cable size (voltage drop ruins the charge). And if you fit lithium, the whole system — mains charger, engine booster and solar regulator — must be LiFePO4-compatible.

Signs your leisure battery is on its way out

A fridge that can't get through the night, lights that lose their punch, a water pump that loses pressure with the engine off, or a charger that shows “full” after five minutes are all symptoms of a leisure battery at the end of its life. With lead batteries this usually coincides with having discharged it below 50 % too many times. Before replacing it, measure the resting voltage and check the charger is applying the correct curve.
