HEV (Full Hybrid)

Vehicle with combustion engine + electric motor that can move the car in EV mode for short distances. Does not plug in.

HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle, full hybrid) combines an internal combustion engine with a traction electric motor, powered by a high-voltage battery (200-300 V) that charges exclusively from the combustion engine and regenerative braking — it does not plug in. The car can move in pure electric mode for 1-3 km at low speed (pulling into a car park, crawling in traffic), significantly reducing urban consumption. The icon of the segment is the Toyota Prius (1997, first mass-market hybrid); the Toyota HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) system is the reference and also powers the Lexus range (same group).

Other current full-hybrid systems: Honda i-MMD, Renault E-Tech, Hyundai/Kia Smartstream. The auxiliary 12 V battery (which the user does replace) is usually a small AGM (40-50 Ah) — it only powers the computer and starts up the high-voltage system, it does NOT drive the wheels.
