The Odyssey ODP-AGM78 in practice

ODP-AGM78 vs Odyssey ODX-AGM34M

The Odyssey ODP-AGM78 offers 61 Ah and 792 A cold cranking in a 274 × 173 × 188 mm case. The Odyssey ODX-AGM34M, same brand and technology, goes up to 65 Ah and 880 A with 3 mm more length and costs €82.30 more. Going up is only worth it if the tray allows it and the car cranks lazily in the cold; in normal use this one is plenty.

When not to choose it

Technically it suits any car of its size, but it is only worth paying for if yours has Start-Stop, regenerative braking or heavy loads; in a simple car a conventional battery does the job for half.

The Odyssey ODP-AGM78 with AGM technology delivers the 61 Ah at V and 792 A of cold cranking current (EN) that cars with Start-Stop, regenerative braking and heavy electrical loads need. Its 274 × 173 × 188 mm and the positive terminal on the left make it the exact replacement for the 61 Ah battery fitted as standard to many Start-Stop cars.

In short: the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 (61 Ah, 792 A, 274 × 173 × 188 mm, positive terminal on the left). It is an AGM battery for cars with Start-Stop and regenerative braking; if your car came with AGM, always replace it with another AGM.

  • Direct replacement for the original Start-Stop battery.
  • Keeps comfort loads running with the engine off at the lights.
  • Fast recharge on the move thanks to low internal resistance.
  • AGM: faster recharging and better cycle resistance than a conventional battery.

What the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 is for

With 61 Ah, the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 is the replacement for cars with Start-Stop, regenerative braking and heavy electrical loads. After the swap it may be necessary to register the new battery in the ECU so that energy management works correctly. Check that it matches your current battery in dimensions, terminals and hold-down: this reference has a weight of 21.40 kg and Side terminals.

Will it fit your current battery tray?

It has external dimensions of 274 × 173 × 188 mm and weighs 21.40 kg. The positive terminal on the left decides which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes most buying mistakes, so check it before ordering. It uses Side terminals, the system that anchors and connects it in the vehicle. Before replacing it, measure your current battery tray: if all three dimensions and the terminal positions match, the swap is direct and needs no adapters.

The Odyssey ODP-AGM78: ODP range and AGM technology

The ODP is the Odyssey range the ODP-AGM78 belongs to: it shares the same construction and quality criteria with the rest of the series, and varies in capacity and format to suit each vehicle.

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology seals the electrolyte in glass microfibre. The result is a maintenance-free battery that is highly vibration-resistant and able to withstand deep discharges that would ruin a classic lead-acid battery.

What Odyssey does differently

Odyssey, part of the EnerSys group, makes thin-plate pure-lead (TPPL) batteries: extreme cranking, total vibration resistance and very long service life in motorsport, 4x4, marine and demanding vehicles. We guarantee that every Odyssey arrives new, charged and with the manufacturer's full warranty.

Manufacturer's warranty

The Odyssey ODP-AGM78 comes with the manufacturer's official warranty. To keep it valid, always fit the same technology as the original battery (AGM or EFB) and register the replacement if your vehicle requires it.

Care and maintenance

Charge with a charger that has an AGM mode: it limits the voltage and protects the glass-fibre separators. In a Start-Stop car the battery is controlled by the ECU; after replacing it, the new battery may need to be registered so the system adjusts charging.

Delivery times and returns

Same-day dispatch from our warehouse for in-stock orders placed before 6:00 pm: 24-48 working hours in mainland Spain and Portugal, 3 to 5 days in the islands and the rest of Europe. Returns are accepted for 14 days if the battery has not been used (free collection on the Iberian mainland). You will receive tracking by email.

Frequently asked questions

Is this battery AGM? What is it for?

Yes: the ODP-AGM78 from Odyssey uses AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology, a sealed lead-acid battery whose electrolyte soaks a glass-fibre mat. It is the technology required by cars with advanced Start-Stop and regenerative braking. It withstands more cycles than a conventional battery and copes better with heat.

Is the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 battery suitable for Start-Stop?

Yes: being AGM, the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 is designed for Start-Stop cars. AGM batteries support advanced Start-Stop and regenerative braking thanks to their higher cycle count. It works once fitted; on most modern cars, registering it via OBD is advisable so the alternator applies the optimum charging profile. As a rule: EFB for basic Start-Stop, AGM when there is also regenerative braking (more cycles); in any case, what the car manufacturer specifies.

What should I bear in mind when fitting this Start-Stop battery?

On most cars it is a 15-30 minute job needing only a 10 mm spanner (up to twice as long when the battery is under a seat or in the boot). With the engine stopped and the key removed, always start with the negative (−) terminal, then the positive (+). Free the clamp, swap the battery without turning it round (this one has positive on the left) so the polarity stays the same, and reconnect in reverse: positive (+) first, negative (−) last. Start-Stop or BMS specifics: do not remove the IBS sensor on the negative terminal (just loosen the cable nut); after the swap, register the battery via OBD so the alternator charges with the right profile; and never step down in technology: if the car had AGM or EFB, the new one must be the same or better, as a conventional battery lasts only a few months. Before you start, check the car handbook: the manufacturer's procedure always comes first. Our full step-by-step guide is on the blog.

What is the service life of the ODP-AGM78 model?

As a guide, you can expect the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 to last 5 to 8 years in mild-climate car use with Start-Stop, although the real figure may be higher or lower. It can vary considerably with usage (short or long journeys), temperature, the condition of the alternator and charging system, power drawn with the engine off and maintenance, plus the car itself and Start-Stop. Cold demands more at every start and intense heat evaporates the electrolyte.

What size is this battery?

Before buying, measure the space in your car: one extra millimetre can stop the hold-down clamp from closing. The Odyssey ODP-AGM78 takes up 274×173×188 mm (length, width and height, terminals included), the European L3 case size.

What polarity does the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 battery have?

On the Odyssey ODP-AGM78, the polarity is positive on the left. To check, stand the battery in front of you with the terminals nearest you: the positive (+) is the one with the red ring. Compare it with the battery you are replacing: if it does not match, cables must be lengthened or the system reconfigured, with a risk of short circuit.

Will the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 battery fit my car?

Not sure? Try your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA detect model and engine) or the "Compatible vehicles" tab, checked by our technical team; if your car is not there, send us make, model, engine and year on WhatsApp and we will reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 10:00–13:30 and 16:30–18:00 (Spanish time, CET)). The car manufacturer's specifications always take priority over our tables.

Which batteries are equivalent to the Odyssey ODP-AGM78?

To replace the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 without modifications, the other battery must be identical in size (L3 case), polarity, Ah and CCA. Technology matters too: in Start-Stop cars, an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery. The options at the same level are in the "Equivalents" section of this page.

What advantages does the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 AGM battery offer over an EFB?

The absorbent glass-fibre mat of an AGM retains the electrolyte, so it cannot leak and withstands considerably more cycles than a conventional battery. It is the recommended choice for advanced Start-Stop with regenerative braking (BMW EfficientDynamics, Mercedes Eco, Audi MHEV, Land Rover ECO, Volvo i-Stop) and copes better than an EFB with tilting, vibration and extreme temperatures. This ODP-AGM78 delivers 792 A cold cranking (EN).

Do I need to register the Odyssey ODP-AGM78 on the car after installation?

The alternator detects the new battery and adapts the charge automatically, so on most cars it is not compulsory. Even so, it is advisable to register it via OBD so charging is optimum from the first minute and the battery lasts longer, particularly on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo or Land Rover, with more sophisticated BMS. Any workshop with an OBD scanner does it in a few minutes; DIY, with VCDS or Carista (VAG group), Bimmercode (BMW) or iCarsoft. Even if you do not register the Odyssey ODP-AGM78, the car will start correctly; the profile adjusts within a few days.
