Varta D54 12V 65Ah 650A is a battery designed specifically for Start-Stop vehicles. Withstands up to 3× more start cycles than a conventional battery and maintains performance with BMS and regenerative braking systems.

The Varta D54 car battery is the 12 V, 65 Ah model with 650 A of cold cranking power (EN) from Varta's Dynamic EFB (formerly Blue Dynamic EFB) range, intended for cars with a Start-Stop system and high electrical demand. Measuring 278 × 175 × 175 mm and with the positive terminal on the right, it is the direct replacement for cars fitted from the factory with a 65 Ah battery in this format.
The Varta D54 is compatible with more than 52 vehicles: it is fitted as standard or as a replacement by brands such as Ford, Opel, Vauxhall, Renault, Ferrari and Volkswagen. It is a go-to option when you need a battery for a Ford, Opel or other models that use this same format. Added to that list are models from Fiat and Audi. It covers 8 original equipment references, one of the widest coverages in its format. Not sure whether it is the one for your car? Check in seconds by entering your registration in our finder.
In terms of format, the Varta D54 measures 278 × 175 × 175 mm (length × width × height) and weighs 18,4 kg. The positive terminal on the right determines which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes the most buying mistakes, so it is worth checking before you order. It uses a B13 hold-down and terminal 1, the system that anchors it to the vehicle's battery tray. Before replacing it, measure the space your current battery occupies: if it matches on all three dimensions and on terminal position, the swap is direct and needs no adapters.
The Dynamic EFB range (silver label) uses EFB technology, an enhanced lead-acid built for entry-level Start-Stop systems and vehicles with high energy demand. It withstands far more cycling than a conventional battery.
It is the correct replacement for cars that came with EFB from the factory and a solid step up from a standard battery. It sits one rung below AGM in terms of cycling demand.
In a modern vehicle the battery powers ever more electronics even with the engine switched off. This series is sized for that draw and for restarting the engine dozens of times a day without losing performance, something a traditional starter battery cannot cope with. This battery used to belong to Varta's Blue Dynamic EFB range; following the brand's commercial renaming (2025), it forms part of the new Dynamic EFB series.
When a workshop recommends Varta it is not down to marketing: it is one of the brands with the lowest return rates in the sector, with an application coverage spanning practically the whole European fleet, from the city car to the commercial vehicle.
Behind Varta is Clarios, one of the largest manufacturers of starter batteries in the world and a supplier to the assembly lines of numerous car brands. That German engineering heritage translates into reliable starting year after year.
Varta's production combines automated lines with verification of more than 100 parameters per unit; that traceability is what underpins its reputation for reliable starting throughout the battery's life.
The Varta D54 battery comes with a 2-year official warranty from the manufacturer.
In a vehicle with Start-Stop the battery works much harder, so it pays to drive far enough for it to recharge and to always replace it with the same type (AGM for AGM, EFB for EFB) so the electronic management is not thrown out of calibration. To get the best from it, avoid overly short journeys, which prevent it from recharging after each start. Keeping the terminals clean and the hold-down secure prevents faults caused by vibration in the engine bay.

See all 58 compatible vehiclesStep-by-step guide to replace your car battery in 15-30 minutes (longer if the battery is under the seat or in the boot) without losing vehicle settings.
Park on a flat surface, switch off the engine and remove the key. Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are off. Wait 1-2 minutes before starting.
Open the bonnet. The battery is usually in the engine bay, but in many modern cars it may be in the boot or under the passenger seat. Check the manual if you cannot find it.
Use the 10 mm wrench to loosen the negative cable nut (black, marked −) and remove the cable from the post. Move it aside so it cannot touch any bodywork.
Repeat with the positive cable (red, marked +). Important: never let a terminal touch metal of the car while the other is still connected.
Loosen the bottom hold-down clamp with the same wrench. Lift the battery carefully (it can weigh 15-25 kg). Clean the tray with a brush and baking soda if there is corrosion.
Place the battery in the same orientation as the old one (positive terminal on the same side). Tighten the hold-down clamp firmly.
Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−). Tighten the nuts with the wrench until each terminal does not move. Apply anti-spark grease if you have any.
Close the bonnet. Start the engine to confirm everything works. On cars with Start-Stop or a BMS, you may need to register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.
Yes. The D54 is an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): flooded lead-acid reinforced with plate additives. Withstands more cycles than a conventional but fewer than an AGM. Fitted to cars with basic Start-Stop (no regenerative braking). More affordable than an equivalent AGM, lifespan 4-6 years.
Yes. As EFB technology it is designed for Start-Stop vehicles. EFB batteries cover basic Start-Stop (no regenerative braking). EFB is recommended for basic Start-Stop; AGM is recommended when regenerative braking is also present, thanks to its higher cycle capability. It works straight out of the box — on most modern vehicles registering the battery via OBD is recommended so the alternator automatically applies the optimal charging profile.
Three ways: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team for the D54; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET).
In most cars it fits in 15-30 minutes with a 10 mm wrench; if the battery is under the seat or in the boot the time can double. See the step-by-step guide on this page. Quick summary: 1) switch off the engine and remove the key; 2) locate the original battery (engine bay, boot or under seat); 3) disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+); 4) loosen the hold-down clamp and remove the old battery; 5) fit the new one in the same orientation — match the polarity shown on the product sheet; 6) connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−). On cars with Start-Stop or BMS, register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.

Expected lifespan of the Varta D54 is 4 to 6 years in basic Start-Stop car use. In cold regions it drops slightly due to cold-start stress; in very hot regions it also drops because of electrolyte evaporation. To extend its life: avoid deep discharges (headlights on with engine off), have the alternator checked yearly, and keep the battery clean and properly secured.
Dimensions (length × width × height) are 278×175×175 mm — also written as 278x175x175 mm and correspond to the European LB3 case size — following the European DIN standard. Always measure the space in your car before buying: even one extra millimetre can prevent the hold-down clamp from closing. The height shown includes the terminals.
It weighs 18,3 kg. Most of the weight is lead. If you plan to fit it yourself, use gloves and a carrying strap (AGM batteries are slightly heavier than conventional due to the absorbent glass-mat fibre).
Nominal capacity 65 Ah[?cca: and [cold-cranking amps 650 A]] at 12 V. Ah measure the total energy available (autonomy); CCA (also written A in cold or EN under the European standard) measure the instantaneous power to crank the starter motor. A battery with more CCA starts better in winter; one with more Ah keeps accessories on for longer.

Directly interchangeable batteries (same dimensions, same polarity, same Ah and CCA) are the OEM equivalents from leading brands: Bosch, Tudor, Exide and, depending on the model, Banner or Yuasa. Exact equivalence depends on technology — an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery in Start-Stop cars. See the "Equivalents" section to view recommended options at the same performance level.
This battery and its equivalents from Bosch, Tudor or Exide are technically comparable: same dimensions, same voltage and same capacity. The differences are warranty (Varta and Bosch: 2 years; Tudor and Exide: 2 years on the equivalent line), manufacturing plant (Varta and Bosch share origin in the Clarios Group; Tudor and Exide belong to Exide Technologies) and price. For private use any of these brands will give 4-6 years of life. Compare them in the "Equivalents" section.
