Check your car battery in 2 minutes before winter
RSS
The first frost of the year is the day with the most cars that won't start: cold cuts the cranking power of an ageing battery by up to 35%.
This 2-minute check tells you whether your battery will make it to spring or whether it's smarter to replace it now, calmly and at the best price, instead of on a freezing Monday with a tow truck.
Already been left stranded one morning? Here we explain why your car won't start in winter and how to avoid it.

- It's more than 4–5 years old. That's the average lifespan; beyond it, every frost is a lottery.
- Sluggish starts. The engine turns over more slowly than usual, especially in the morning.
- Lights dim at idle or when starting.
- Below 12.4V at rest. With a multimeter, measure after the car has sat for hours: 12.6V is good, 12.4V is marginal; below that, recharge it and, if it drops again, replace it.
- You only do short trips. The battery never fully recharges and the cold finishes the job.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wait until it dies completely?
Better not: a dying battery punishes the alternator and starter motor, and tends to strand you on the coldest day. Replacing it in time is cheaper than a tow.
How long does a car battery last?
Between 4 and 6 years depending on use and climate. Short trips and the previous summer's heat shorten its life.
How do I find my car's exact battery?
