What is the difference between GEL and AGM on a boat?

GEL tolerates deep, slow discharges better, which makes it superior as a house battery; AGM delivers higher current peaks and suits engine starting. In the EXIDE Marina range each technology has its own series.

Can I start the engine with a Marina GEL?

That is not its job: it is optimised for cycling, not for cranking peaks. For engine starting, EXIDE offers the Marina Start and Marina Start AGM series.

How do I charge a GEL boat battery?

With a charger that has a dedicated GEL profile and controlled voltage: charging on the wrong profile can damage the gel. Modern marine chargers and solar regulators include this profile as standard.

How long does a GEL house battery last?

Far more cycles than a starting battery used for the same task. Depth of discharge is the key: with partial discharges and full recharges, a Marina GEL keeps going for many seasons.

EXIDE MARINE GEL

EXIDE Marina GEL batteries are the deep-cycle series of EXIDE's marine range: GEL batteries for onboard house loads with cyclic demand, available from 60 to 210 Ah.

A GEL boat battery uses gelified electrolyte: it withstands repeated deep discharges, cannot spill and needs no maintenance. It is the ideal house battery to power the fridge, chartplotter, lights, radio or windlass on sailboats and motorboats, day after day and season after season.

GEL deep-cycle power for your onboard loads

In the EXIDE Marina GEL series the electrolyte is immobilised as a gel, the construction that best tolerates the slow, deep discharges of a full day on the water. Unlike a starting battery, a marine deep-cycle battery is designed to release its energy over hours and recover cycle after cycle, with no spills and no maintenance.

EXIDE Marina GEL models and onboard uses

ES650 (60 Ah) — light house loads: lights, radio and electronics on small boats.
ES900 (80 Ah) — house battery for sailboats and motorboats with a fridge and chartplotter.
ES1200 (110 Ah) — mid-size cruising loads: instruments, lighting and auxiliary equipment.
ES2400 (210 Ah) — high-capacity house banks for larger boats or long stays at anchor.

How to size your GEL house battery

Add up the daily consumption of your equipment (Ah) and choose a capacity that avoids full discharges: the shallower the average depth of discharge, the more cycles the GEL will deliver. Our battery comparator lets you compare the four Marina GEL models by capacity and dimensions to size your house bank.
