What is a GEL battery?

GEL is a sealed lead-acid battery where the electrolyte is in gel form (not liquid or absorbed). It tolerates deep discharges very well and is ideal for cyclic use (solar, motorcycles, electric wheelchairs). Far more tolerant of deep discharges than conventional batteries.

When should I choose GEL over AGM?

Choose GEL when usage is mostly cyclic (repeated deep discharges) and ambient temperature is moderate. AGM handles extreme cold and high-current cranking better. GEL handles deep discharges better and lasts longer in motorcycles with steady consumption but infrequent cranking.

How long does a GEL battery last?

Between 6 and 10 years under normal conditions — longer than most technologies. Real-world life depends heavily on the charging regime (it needs a GEL-specific charger — the curve differs from AGM or conventional) and ambient temperature.

Can I charge a GEL with any charger?

No. GEL requires a charger with a specific GEL profile (max charge voltage ~14.1 V vs 14.4-14.7 V for AGM). Charging it with an AGM or conventional profile drastically shortens lifespan. Any modern smart charger (CTEK, NOCO, Optimate) has a GEL mode — always select it.

Does GEL handle the cold?

Yes, but not as well as AGM. For starts in motorcycles in very cold climates (-10°C or below), AGM has better cranking performance (higher CCA). For cyclic use (energy, deep discharges), GEL is the best option even in cold conditions.
