The Varta E23 car battery is the 12 V, 70 Ah model with 630 A of cold cranking power (EN) from Varta's Dynamic SLI (formerly Blue Dynamic) range, intended for cars with conventional starting, without a Start-Stop system. It replaces the original battery with no modifications in cars using the 261 × 175 × 220 mm format: the same 70 Ah capacity and the same terminal layout (positive on the right).

  • Long service life with normal use and a charging system in good order.
  • Maintenance-free lead-acid technology: no topping up with water.
  • Direct replacement for the original battery in cars without Start-Stop.
  • Reliable cold starting thanks to its high cranking current.

Vehicles compatible with the Varta E23 battery

This battery is listed as compatible with more than 369 vehicles from manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Infiniti, Honda and Lexus. If you are after a battery for a Toyota or Nissan in these dimensions, the E23 is one of the usual replacement references. It also appears as a replacement in vehicles from Mazda, Mitsubishi, Kia, Suzuki, Ford, Isuzu, Emgrand and Renault, among other manufacturers. It covers 5 original equipment references, one of the widest coverages in its format. Not sure whether it is the one for your car? Check in seconds by entering your registration in our finder.

Format and fitting of the Varta E23

In terms of format, the Varta E23 measures 261 × 175 × 220 mm (length × width × height) and weighs 16,8 kg. The positive terminal on the right determines which side the cables end up on: it is the detail that causes the most buying mistakes, so it is worth checking before you order. It uses a B01 hold-down and terminal 1, the system that anchors it to the vehicle's battery tray. For the swap to be direct, the space taken by your current battery must respect those three dimensions and the same terminal layout; otherwise adapters would be needed or the hold-down would change.

The Varta E23 and the Dynamic SLI range

The Dynamic SLI series (blue label) is Varta's lead-acid line for cars with conventional starting, without Start-Stop. It succeeds the Blue, Silver and Black Dynamic ranges and keeps the calcium-silver grid technology that guarantees low self-discharge and reliable cold starting, with no maintenance required.

Aimed at the bulk of the car and van fleet, it offers Varta's classic balance between cranking power and durability at a moderate price: the logical replacement for the original battery in a car without Start-Stop.

This series uses lead-acid technology with plates optimised for a good balance between cranking power and service life. It is the natural successor when your car has no Start-Stop and came with a standard battery from new: the same thinking, without paying over the odds for a chemistry you do not need. This battery used to belong to Varta's Blue Dynamic, Silver Dynamic or Black Dynamic range; following the brand's commercial renaming (2025), it forms part of the new Dynamic SLI series.

Why choose a Varta battery

Varta is an original equipment (OEM) supplier to a good share of Europe's car manufacturers: many cars leave the factory with a Varta fitted. Buying a replacement means, in most cases, refitting the original battery with the same quality and the brand's official warranty.

Varta combines more than a century of experience with Clarios's industrial production: it is the battery many manufacturers choose as standard and one of the most recommended by workshops. Like every lead-acid battery, it is 100% recyclable.

Varta is Europe's leading maker of starter batteries: its production volume and quality controls guarantee consistent reliability batch after batch, something own-brand makes cannot always promise.

Manufacturer's warranty

The Varta E23 battery comes with a 2-year official warranty from the manufacturer.

Care and maintenance

To get the most out of it, keep the alternator in good order and avoid leaving lights or accessories on with the engine switched off. Repeated very short journeys are its main enemy: they stop the battery from recharging fully and shorten its life. If the car is going to stand unused for weeks, it is worth disconnecting the terminal or using a trickle charger so it does not drop below the safe threshold. Making sure the terminals are clean and properly tightened also helps towards reliable starting.

How to change the battery

Step-by-step guide to replace your car battery in 15-30 minutes (longer if the battery is under the seat or in the boot) without losing vehicle settings.

⏱ 15-30 min🛠 Tools: 10 mm wrench · Protective gloves
  1. Step 1. Prepare the vehicle

Park on a flat surface, switch off the engine and remove the key. Make sure all lights and electrical accessories are off. Wait 1-2 minutes before starting.

  2. Step 2. Locate the battery

Open the bonnet. The battery is usually in the engine bay, but in many modern cars it may be in the boot or under the passenger seat. Check the manual if you cannot find it.

  3. Step 3. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal

Use the 10 mm wrench to loosen the negative cable nut (black, marked −) and remove the cable from the post. Move it aside so it cannot touch any bodywork.

  4. Step 4. Disconnect the positive (+) terminal

Repeat with the positive cable (red, marked +). Important: never let a terminal touch metal of the car while the other is still connected.

  5. Step 5. Remove the old battery

Loosen the bottom hold-down clamp with the same wrench. Lift the battery carefully (it can weigh 15-25 kg). Clean the tray with a brush and baking soda if there is corrosion.

  6. Step 6. Install the new battery

Place the battery in the same orientation as the old one (positive terminal on the same side). Tighten the hold-down clamp firmly.

  7. Step 7. Connect the cables

Connect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (−). Tighten the nuts with the wrench until each terminal does not move. Apply anti-spark grease if you have any.

  8. Step 8. Verify the engine starts

Close the bonnet. Start the engine to confirm everything works. On cars with Start-Stop or a BMS, you may need to register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if the E23 model fits my car?

Three ways: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team for the E23; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET).

How is the Varta E23 battery installed in the vehicle?

In most cars it fits in 15-30 minutes with a 10 mm wrench; if the battery is under the seat or in the boot the time can double. See the step-by-step guide on this page. Quick summary: 1) switch off the engine and remove the key; 2) locate the original battery (engine bay, boot or under seat); 3) disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+); 4) loosen the hold-down clamp and remove the old battery; 5) fit the new one in the same orientation — match the polarity shown on the product sheet; 6) connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−). On cars with Start-Stop or BMS, register the battery via OBD so the alternator applies the correct charging profile.

What warranty does the Varta E23 battery have?

The official manufacturer warranty is 2 years and covers manufacturing defects. Coverage includes cell breakdowns, internal short-circuits and abnormal capacity decreases. Wear from misuse (prolonged overcharging, wrong charger or faulty alternator) is not covered. If the battery fails, we replace it at no cost after a technical inspection.

How long does Varta E23 delivery take?

In mainland Spain and Portugal it arrives in 24 h if you order before 17:00 and the battery is in stock — it leaves the same day and arrives the next business day. Afternoon or weekend orders ship the next business day. For Balearics, Canaries and other EU destinations, allow 2-5 days. Shipping cost is calculated in the cart based on destination and service (standard, express, cash on delivery). Tracking number is sent by email + SMS as soon as the parcel ships.

Can I return the Varta E23 battery if it doesn't fit or doesn't work?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to return it. In mainland Spain and Portugal returns are FREE — we cover the return shipping cost via prepaid label. In other EU countries the return shipping cost is the customer's. It must arrive in its original packaging with no signs of installation. If it was defective, the warranty covers replacement even after the 14-day period.

What is the price of the E23 model?

The current price at baterias.com is €83.10 (VAT included; €68.68 excl. VAT), updated every 24 hours. The applicable VAT may vary with the destination country and is confirmed in the cart. Shipping cost is calculated in the cart based on destination and chosen service (standard, express, cash on delivery).

Where do I find the E23 model online?

At baterias.com — authorised distributor with real stock, 24h delivery in mainland Spain and Portugal if you order before 17:00, and full manufacturer warranty. Shipping cost is calculated in the cart based on destination and chosen service (standard, express, cash on delivery). Secure payment by card, Bizum, PayPal or bank transfer. If you choose at-home installation, our technician will take the used battery and dispose of it through an authorised collection point.

What is the service life of the E23 model?

Expected lifespan of the Varta E23 is 4 to 6 years in regular car use without Start-Stop. In cold regions it drops slightly due to cold-start stress; in very hot regions it also drops because of electrolyte evaporation. To extend its life: avoid deep discharges (headlights on with engine off), have the alternator checked yearly, and keep the battery clean and properly secured.

What are the measurements of the E23 model?

Dimensions (length × width × height) are 261×175×220 mm — also written as 261x175x220 mm — following the European DIN standard. Always measure the space in your car before buying: even one extra millimetre can prevent the hold-down clamp from closing. The height shown includes the terminals.

How many kilos does this battery weigh?

It weighs 16,1 kg. Most of the weight is lead. If you plan to fit it yourself, use gloves and a carrying strap (AGM batteries are slightly heavier than conventional due to the absorbent glass-mat fibre).

What is the capacity and CCA of the E23 model?

Nominal capacity 70 Ah[?cca: and [cold-cranking amps 630 A]] at 12 V. Ah measure the total energy available (autonomy); CCA (also written A in cold or EN under the European standard) measure the instantaneous power to crank the starter motor. A battery with more CCA starts better in winter; one with more Ah keeps accessories on for longer.

What barcode does this battery have?

The manufacturer reference (MPN) is E23 and its ETN code is 5704120633132 (short form 570 412 063), the European identifier used in spare-part catalogues. The EAN-13 barcode is 4016987167625. It belongs to the VARTA BLUE dynamic range. Any of these codes identifies exactly this battery when requesting quotes or comparing prices.

Is the E23 valid for my vehicle?

Three options to confirm: 1) enter your number plate in the finder (DGT/DVLA/KBA auto-detect your model and engine); 2) check the "Compatible vehicles" tab on this page, where we list every vehicle verified by our technical team; 3) if you cannot find your model, message us on WhatsApp with brand, model, engine and year — we reply during business hours (Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 CET). The E23 fits 369 verified vehicle versions in our database.

Which batteries are equivalent to the Varta E23?

Directly interchangeable batteries (same dimensions, same polarity, same Ah and CCA) are the OEM equivalents from leading brands: Bosch, Tudor, Exide and, depending on the model, Banner or Yuasa. Exact equivalence depends on technology — an EFB cannot be replaced with a conventional battery in Start-Stop cars. See the "Equivalents" section to view recommended options at the same performance level.

Is the E23 model better than its equivalents from other brands?

This battery and its equivalents from Bosch, Tudor or Exide are technically comparable: same dimensions, same voltage and same capacity. The differences are warranty (Varta and Bosch: 2 years; Tudor and Exide: 2 years on the equivalent line), manufacturing plant (Varta and Bosch share origin in the Clarios Group; Tudor and Exide belong to Exide Technologies) and price. For private use any of these brands will give 4-6 years of life. Compare them in the "Equivalents" section.
