GEL batteries

In GEL batteries the electrolyte is immobilised in silica gel: maintenance-free, spill-proof and with far better deep-discharge endurance than AGM or conventional batteries. The reference for continuous cyclic use: solar, caravans, electric wheelchairs, marine house banks and industrial cleaning. They are not starter batteries.

Can a GEL battery start my car?

No. Gel limits the instantaneous current: it is designed for deep, long, repeated discharges, not the surge of an engine start. For starting use conventional, EFB or AGM.

GEL or AGM for my caravan or solar system?

If you discharge deeply every day (true cyclic use), GEL lasts more cycles. If you also need current peaks or a lower budget, a deep-cycle AGM is a good alternative.

Do they need a special charger?

Yes: a charger with a GEL curve (lower absorption voltage). Charging at high voltage with a conventional charger damages them irreversibly.

How many cycles does a GEL battery deliver?

It depends on depth of discharge: at 50% good ones exceed 600-800 cycles; with partial discharges, considerably more.
